Gray Bird
installation
This body of work consists of pastel drawings centered around the theme of Longing for Green. The idea for this theme emerged during an artist residency I participated in in Kumamoto, Japan, in 2023. Near the place where I stayed was an old coal mine, and right next to it stood an amusement park called “Greenland.” Originally, the park was built as a recreational facility for coal miners.
To me, the word green came to represent more than just a color—it evoked a longing to rise from the dark underground into the bright open sky. After returning home, I encountered a green parrot flying in the skies over Cologne, and suddenly, the longing for the sky and the flying green connected in my mind.
As I began painting landscapes from a rooftop, imagining the world from a bird’s-eye view, I noticed that the flying parrot appeared gray when backlit. The more I tried to see its green color, the more it dissolved into the light. That contradiction—of seeking something only to lose sight of it—deepened my creative process.
Based on that experience, I used the gray pastel dust produced during the drawing process to depict a gray parrot. The bird, rendered in gray from the residue of vibrant landscapes, came to embody the paradox of longing: the more you desire it, the farther it seems to slip away. In this sense, the parrot became a symbol of my yearning for green.
For this exhibition, I chose an installation format to express the thinking process itself. Vivid landscapes are placed at the back, while gray-toned birds and trees are positioned in the foreground. Through this visual experience—where the distance glows with color, and the closer you get, the more color fades—I invite viewers to contemplate the meaning of Longing for Green.

インスタレーション
本作は「憧れのグリーン」をテーマにパステル画を描いた作品群です。このテーマは、2023年に熊本でアーティスト・イン・レジデンスに参加した際に得たものです。滞在地の近くには炭鉱跡があり、その隣に「グリーンランド」という遊園地がありました。この遊園地は、もともと炭鉱労働者のために設けられた娯楽施設でした。
私は「グリーン」という言葉に、単なる色ではなく、暗い地下から明るい空への憧れのような意味を感じました。帰国後、ケルンで緑色のオウムに出会い、空への憧れと空を飛ぶ「グリーン」がつながりました。
屋上で鳥の目線を想像しながら風景を描き始めた私は、空を飛ぶオウムが逆光で灰色に見えることに気づきました。見たいと思うほど、その色は逆光に紛れて見えなくなってしまう——その矛盾が、作品制作をさらに深めるきっかけとなりました。
この体験をもとに、制作中に出る灰色のパステルの粉を使って、灰色のオウムを描きました。色鮮やかな風景から生まれた灰色の鳥は、憧れれば憧れるほど遠ざかる——そんな「グリーン」への思いを象徴する存在となりました。
今回の展示では、思考の過程自体を表現するため、インスタレーション形式をとりました。奥にはカラフルな風景画を、手前には灰色で描かれた鳥や木を配置しています。遠くは鮮やかで、近づくほど色が失われるという視覚体験を通して、「憧れのグリーン」の意味を観客に問いかけたいと思っています。
