When I participated in an artist-in-residence program in Arao in 2024, I wondered what the “green” in the name of the amusement park Greenland stands for. There is a similar amusement park named Greenland in Hokkaido. And not to forget Greenland, which lies in the Arctic – a place that is also covered by ice.
These similarities show that the “green” in all these Greenland names does not simply refer to the green color of leaves in nature.
So, what does this “green” mean? I have defined it as “longing for green” and developed various hypotheses that I express in my works.
2024年に荒尾でアーティスト・イン・レジデンスに参加した際、グリーンランドの「グリーン」とは何を表しているのだろうと疑問に思いました。グリーンランドは北海道にもあります。そこは冬になるとスキー場になり、「ホワイトランド」という別名もあります。そして忘れてはならないのが、北極に位置するグリーンランドです。そこもまた氷に覆われています。これらの共通点から、どのグリーンランドの「グリーン」も、自然の葉の緑色を指しているわけではないことがわかりました。では、グリーンランドの「グリーン」が意味するものとは何か。そこで私はこれを「憧れのグリーン」と定義し、さまざまな仮説を立てながら作品を制作しています

Until now, I had regarded the Ferris wheel as a point of orientation. But one day, I discovered it from a location where it shouldn’t have been visible. In fact, the change in distance had altered my perspective, making the Ferris wheel visible once again. This experience transformed the monumental Ferris wheel into a light, almost floating presence and rendered my own location uncertain. To get lost means to arrive at an unfamiliar place—perhaps closer to the longed-for green.

There are various “Greenlands”—the Green Land in Arao, the one in Hokkaido, and the one in the Arctic. The Arctic island got its name from the Viking Erik the Red, who wanted to attract settlers. Ironically, this “Greenland” is also an inhospitable, icy land. I tried to approach this Greenland from Arao by drawing animals and landscapes, cutting them out, and placing them on my dashboard. The white margin of my sketchbook gradually became whiter over time. Perhaps the closer you get to the landscape, the whiter it becomes.

Performance
The history of the Mitsui Greenland amusement park is inseparably connected to the history of coal mining. When I learned this, I began to perceive the Ferris wheel as a device leading up to the sky. For the miners who spent their days underground, the sky was a place of longing. The transition from black coal to green landscape, and further to the red Ferris wheel, symbolizes an upward movement—perhaps this very color spectrum represents the “longing for green.”

In Hokkaido, I saw a motionless Ferris wheel in winter, occupied by ravens. Coal is also known as “raven stone.” Usually, coal lies deep underground, but here it seemed to rise skyward in the form of a raven. I imagined what ravens see and how they perceive green. Hokkaido is full of abandoned coal mines. If coal originated from ancient swamplands, perhaps the opposite is also possible: black land that awaits the green.

The Greenland Hotel, located next to the amusement park, has a green facade. A wall of green rises in front of me. Problems are often described as a “wall” one runs into. But I keep walking toward this wall. As the light changes, the color of the wall changes too. Perhaps not every wall must be overcome. Perhaps there are other ways to confront problems.

While walking around in Arao searching for green, I noticed the Ferris wheel, which appeared to me as a point of orientation. At a spot by the riverbank, I could see two Ferris wheels—one in front of me and one to my left. This revealed my own position as a third point. I was searching for something, but in the end, it felt as though Arao had found me.

A Million Greens

What first caught my attention was the color green itself. The same kind of bright green used on the floors and roller coasters in Greenland was also found inside the Manda Mine. Yet, when I asked people what this green was called, no one could give me an answer. What is the name of the green used in Greenland?
In Japanese alone, there are 83 different names for green. By slightly altering the proportions of mixed colors, even more variations can emerge. These subtle shifts may be imperceptible.
Using crayons—a medium that allows for layering—I embraced these transforming greens and attempted to give them a name: Greenland Green.
仮説７. “消失とグリーン“
これまで、観覧車は自身の位置を示してくれる存在であると話してきた。しかしある時、見えるはずのない場所から観覧車を発見した。実際には遠く離れることで、それまで観覧車を遮っていた山や建物と私の高低差が減り、観覧車が本来の大きさを発揮し、浮かび上がったように見えたということなのだが、この体験はこれまで信じてきたどっしりとそびえ立つ観覧車を、軽やかな存在へと変化させた。と同時に、自分の立つ場所が曖昧に感じられた。自身の場所を見失うことは、どこかわからない場所にたどり着いたと捉えることができ、それは逆説的に憧れのグリーンに近づいたといえるかもしれない。
仮説６.”北方のグリーン“
これまで荒尾のグリーンランド、北海道にあるグリーンランドについて話してきたが、もう一つグリーンランドがあることを忘れてはならない。それは北極にあるグリーンランドだ。歴史をさかのぼると、海賊（探検家）の“赤毛のエイリーク“が、アイスランドと呼ばれていた場所を発見し、人々に来てもらいやすくするためにグリーンランドに改名したという話が残されている。北極のグリーンランドもまたグリーンとは縁遠い場所であり、その点で他二つのグリーンランドと共通している。私は荒尾にいながらグリーンランドへ向かうことを試みた。グリーンランド（北極）にいるであろう動物や風景を描き、切り抜き、車のダッシュボードに立てる。スケッチブックの余白は、偶然にもボンネットを白く染めていく。グリーンランドへ向かおうとするほど、その風景は白くなっていくものなのかもしれない。
仮説５. “上昇エネルギーのグリーン 黒→緑→赤＝上昇エネルギー“
三井グリーンランドという華やかな遊園地と地中での石炭採掘作業の歴史は切っても切り離せない。この歴史を知った時、観覧車は空へ行くための装置だと理解することができた。暗い地中で毎日を過ごす人たちにとって、ひらけた明るい空に憧れを抱き、向かうことはとても自然に感じられた。石炭の黒から地表の緑、そして空へと向かう赤い観覧車。この色の変化の間、グラデーションこそが“憧れのグリーン“ではないだろうか。
仮説４. “カラスから見るグリーン“
グリーンランドは北海道にもある。私が北海道で見たのは冬季休業で止まった観覧車だった。そこは烏の止まり木となっていた。石炭は別名“からす石“とも呼ばれる。普通なら地中にある真っ黒な石炭。それがカラスの姿を借りて空へと羽ばたいているように感じられた。私はカラスに変身して、カラスに何が見えるのか聞いてみる。全身真っ黒なカラスの目に緑はどんなふうに映っているのだろうか。多くの炭鉱跡地が残る北海道。石炭が取れるということは、昔は緑の広がる湿地帯だったということでもある。緑が黒に変化する現象があるのならば、その逆だってあるかもしれない。黒くなって緑を待つ。
仮説３. “たどり着かない先のグリーン“
グリーンランドにはグリーンランドホテルが隣接している。その外壁はグリーンのタイルに覆われていた。目の前に立ちはだかる緑の壁。解決が困難な問題に直面した時、壁にぶち当たると表現する。だけど私は壁に向かって走り続ける。走り続けていると光の加減が変化し、目の前の緑の色が変化していることに気がつく。乗り越えなくたっていいと思う。そんな問題への向き合い方だってあっていいではないだろうか。
仮説２. “三点目から見える景色にグリーンを重ねる“
グリーンへの手がかりはないかと荒尾を歩き回っている中、ふと顔を上げると観覧車が見える。グリーンを探す旅に出ている私は足元に何があるかに注意しているが、観覧車は北極星のように、私の立ち位置を指し示してくれた。川沿いを歩いている時、前方に観覧車、そして左手に別の観覧車が見える場所を見つけた。この二つの点によって、３点目の点となった私の位置はよりくっきりと浮かび上がる。探し物をしていたはずなのに、反対に自身が荒尾に捕捉されてしまったという感覚。急に視点が俯瞰的になった。Googleマップで見れば確かにここは緑色に見える。
仮説１. “100万通りのグリーン“
最初に気になったのは色としての緑だ。実際にグリーンランドの床やジェットコースターの塗装に使われている明るい緑色と同じような色が万田坑内でも使われていた。これらのグリーンの名前を尋ねても答えられる人はいなかった。グリーンランドのグリーン色の名前は何か。緑は日本名だけでも８３種類ある。混ぜる色の分量を少し変化させることで、色はさらに変化していく。微細な変化は認識できないものかもしれない。私はそんな変容する緑をクレヨンという重ね書きできる素材を用いて許容し、グリーンランドグリーンと名付けようと試みた。
