There are certain things that are invisible to humans, and others that only humans can see. For example, there are landscapes that we can see, yet they still feel unfamiliar to us. On Tsushima Island in Nagasaki Prefecture, much of the primeval forest still remains. Entering this forest is a frightening experience. It is rare to find such a forest with no traces of human presence. Throughout Japan, there is a folk belief in “Yokai” — supernatural beings and monsters. According to oral tradition, Tsushima is home to creatures such as river goblins and even a meteor spirit. Using my own body, I created a “portrait” of the place I actually visited on Tsushima, incorporating both the traditions and the stories surrounding it.
