I went to Norway to find out what larvikite—known locally as the “stone of the night”—truly is. Larvikite is a type of igneous rock quarried in Larvik, in southern Norway. Curious about this so-called “stone of the night,” I traveled to Norway to learn more about it. As I asked around about larvikite, I was told that it is a type of intrusive rock, which normally forms deep underground. However, it was revealed to people because glaciers had scraped away the surface of the land. This led me to visit a glacier in Lom. When I touched the glacier, I noticed that the crystal structure of the ice bore a surprising resemblance to that of larvikite. This experience made me feel that by exploring the relationship between larvikite and glaciers, I might get closer to understanding what larvikite truly is. I have continued my work ever since, driven by this question.
